Session 1: Technique class - We will not necessarily play all the notes of all the set pieces. We will use parts of these works to identify and practice various techniques as required by the class. We do not expect you to have mastered all the notes by the course.

Learning the Recorder Volume 2 -

The idea of this technique session is to play the fingering you are least familiar with.

So, if you are new to C fingering (descant/soprano/tenor) pick the top lines.

If you are new to F fingering (treble/alto/bass) pick the second lines.

We will also be swapping between instruments for those who have learnt both, and discussing how to swap between the two.

Most of the pieces are very short, however if it feels overwhelming, only learn one or two from each section.

Technique is for two hours every morning (12 hours!) so we'll be covering a lot of recorder technique.

Pieces (folk/baroque) duets to focus on:

    2, 12, 13, 42, 47

    Triple Tonguing/Double tonguing:

    3, 4, 15, 36

    63, 64, 66, 68, 71, 75 79, 81

     Greensleeves and Pudding Pies

Please find attached recommended part allocations for pieces in Greensleeves and Pudding Pies by Monika Mandelartz. Please prioritise preparation of the following numbered pieces: 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 20, 24, 26, 30, and 38. We will explore other pieces too, but those pieces contain more technical challenges.

You may prepare each part or choose a part if you are limited for time. This could be a different part for each piece. We will take a flexible approach during technique classes allowing for rotation (where players feel comfortable) as we work through individual pieces. Improvisation exercises will be explored as a creative arm of technical development.

Don't stress if any of the pieces seem overwhelming: Lower parts of most pieces are based on drones that are quite easy to play. We will have plenty of time to work through more difficult sections during the classes (slowly at first). I encourage you to challenge yourself with the busier upper parts, but rest assured that the pieces are accessible for all participants. I will also join in with the drones on cello, so don't feel obliged to stick with lower parts if you possess one of the rarer large recorders.

We will work through a wide cross-section of these instructional pieces themed on Figured Bass and Historic Improvisation. Each player in the class is equipped with SATB recorders: We will freely interchange between sizes as per requirements of individual pieces ensuring that players rotate to receive maximum benefit from the exercises. (The music is very manageable for Tiers 3-4). Individual categories (with practical applications of theoretical concepts) are Drone, Pendulum Bass, Step by Step Bass Line, Pedal Point, Dominant & Tonic chord progressions (later adding parallel chords). Theory concepts will be introduced and discussed step by step. Compositions by Byrd, Monteverdi and Chardavoine are included, as well as folk repertoire. Exercises are delivered in a creative, digestible and accessible format in this exciting new publication by Walhall.
