FRANZ KUNG was one of the early pioneers of 20th Century Recorder making. He founded his workshop in the family villa at Schaffhausen, Switzerland in 1938, and by the early 1950s he was winning international awards for his work. He continued making until his death in 1977, and has been succeeded by several generations of Kung family members.

The current model line-up began to appear in the 1970s and 80s, and has been refined in the subsequent decades into some of the most finely finished and prestigious recorders available.

  • KUNG STUDIO - The recorders with the warm and pleasant sound

A good choice for beginners and for ensemble playing

The sound of the studio recorders is warm and combines well with other recorders.

    • The soprano recorders have a warm sound, are easy to use and are very suitable for beginners.
    • The alto recorders have an extra rich and clear tone.
    • The tenor recorders have a dark sound and are comfortable to hold thanks to the close arrangement of the finger holes.
    • The angled tenor is specifically suitable for players with small hands.

The STUDIO models are manufactured using local types of wood.

  • KUNG SUPERIO - powerful recorders from sopranino to subbass

A strong sound for dynamic playing

    • The sopranino, soprano, alto and tenor recorders are a good choice for solo players. The sound is rich in overtones and clear as in original baroque recorders. They are dynamic and most appropriate for musical forming.
    • The bass, greatbass and subbass have an incomparably strong, round and clear sound. They are pleasant to play and listen to, both in ensembles or in professional solo playing. Despite their size, they can be played comfortably either standing or sitting.

We manufacture the SUPERIO-recorders mainly in local woods, and the soprano and alto recorders also in exotic woods.

  • KUNG MARSYAS - The pure and elegant «flauto dolce»

MARSYAS recorders are characterised by a colourful sound (even with gentle blowing pressure) and the effortless response of the high register. Their sound is very elegant and fine, singing and sweet - a «flauto dolce» in the truest sense of the word.

    • The sopranos MARSYAS are very fine and elegant sounding instruments and have an astonishing flexibility and strength in their sound.
    • Even with low blowing pressure you will hear a very colourful sound on the altos MARSYAS. Its sound spectrum ranges from warm to brilliant, the sound itself remains elegant. The attack and speech of the altos is as well very easy, therefore these altos are very popular with amateur players.
    • The tenors have a bearing and sonorous sound. The bottom notes are very stable even though the tenor is not fitted with keys. The sound is round, warm and quite close.
  • KUNG SPECIALS - The slightly different recorders.
