1. Cadiz (Pieces 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) Cadiz is located in Andalusia, on the southern Spanish Atlantic coast, It was founded by Phoenician seafarers around 1100 BC, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe. The first movement is about a walk at the seaside in the early morning. The second movement is about the wind from the sea, which over the centuries has carried ships from here to foreign coasts all over the world. The third movement is a lamenting song. The frouth movement lives from a polyphonic accompaniment reminiscent of Bach. The fifth movement is the grand finale.Cadiz is famous all over Spain for its colourful Carnaval.
2. Ingxunguphalo (Piece 6) means The Great Sorrow. Soren Sieg says 'I wrote this piece in 2015 when my father was dying, one of the saddest times of my life'.
3. Imibala yenjabulo. African Suite No. 18 (Pieces 7, 8, 9 & 10) Imibala yenjabulo in Xhosa means The Colours of Happiness. 'I wanted to paint the colours of happiness how I experienced them in Africa'.
4. Valse Triste (Piece 11) The second movement of my Suite Grotesque for recorder trio from 1994.
5. Tell them I've had a wonderful life. African Suite No. 27 (Pieces 12, 13 & 14). 'Tell them I had a wonderful life' were supposedly the last words of Ludwig Wittgenstein who really did have an extraordinary life.
6. Meditation (Piece 15) Soren Sieg says' I wrote this piece in March 2022 under the Ukraine's war impact. It's unlike anything I've written before. I wanted to express my deep sadness at the incomprehensible horror of this war. A reflection and remembrance of all those who lost their lives and loved ones in this war'.
The CD includes a booklet with full explanations of the inspiration of these pieces and composer/performer biographies.
