More info

Beginning in Osaka Japan over 60 years ago, Takeyama have now become one of the most sought-after recorder makers anywhere in the world. They employ the extremely fine woodworking skills for which Japan is famous and combine that with a unique gift for matching the voicing of the recorder to the characteristics of the wood being used.

European Boxwood is of medium-heavy weight with a fine uniform texture. One of the attributes making it particularly suited to recorder making is that it is unusually hard in relation to its weight. It is therefore able to achieve a clarity and speed of response usually associated with much heavier timbers. Being lighter weight in relation to its hardness also gives it a warmth of tone that the really heavy timbers cannot match.  A very flexible instrument, useful over a wide range of styles.

Takeyama tend to leave no excess wood anywhere on the recorder – consequently their recorders feel very fine and slender in the hands and weigh significantly less than recorders from most other makers. The finger-hole spacings also tend to be closer.
