2 alternative parts are provided for Treble: One on the normal range and one up an octave. Likewise, 2 alternative parts are provided for Tenor in different clefts. 

Erasmus Widmann was born in 1572 and died in 1634, after falling victim to the plague. Probably bubonic. He was trained as an organist and held various posts. In 1618, he published Gantz, Neue Cantzon, Intraden, Ballettenund Courranten through the publishing house of Abraham Wagenmann, Nuremberg. The complexity and inventiveness of many of the pieces are apparent, showing an advanced musical talent pointing towards later works by Schein and other early baroque masters. 

While Widmann did not specify the instrumentation, he does indicate that the music is appropriate for strings and other various instruments. Certainly a consort winds or a mixed consort is also appropriate, perhaps varying the instrumentation on repeats. For recorder players, the usual ensemble will be SSATB. In only one piece, Cantzon IV, is a Great Bass called for, and then only for one note. However, four of te dances (VIII, X, XI and XXVII) can be readily played down an octave (eg: AATBGb) f a Great Bass is available.
