Ade Vincent contemporary composition "Beyond Motion Lies The Moment" for Recorder Sextet: D/tr, Tr, Tr/T, 2T, B/CB

This composition was part of Orpheus Music Composition Competition 2021.

Much is revealed when we slow down. Some of life’s most meaningful moments lie outside activity.

Beyond Motion Lies the Moment is a suite of four movements that are composed so as to be playable either as a continuous piece of music, without breaks, or as a four-movement work with breaks. In addition, the movements are self-contained and can be performed in isolation as standalone pieces (movements 2 and 4 in particular).

The title of the work reflects this – each word is a meaningful title in isolation while also contributing to the complete phrase, (not necessarily with the same meaning).

  1. Beyond
  2. Motion
  3. Lies
  4. The Moment

Ada Vincent - Beyond Motion Lies the Moment -/AAA/TTTB/Cb  - OMP340

The recorder is a great vehicle for creating interesting sound worlds, with a plethora o extended techniques at our disposal. Beyond Motion Lies the Moment is an exciting new piece which does exactly this, alongside standard notation. Written for the Orpheus Music Composition Competition in 2021 where it received equal third prize) Vincent uses geographical placing of players and a variety of different techniques (harmonics, vibrato, glissandi and more) to conjure up a sense of wonder in the first movement. Beyond. Amplification is suggested for two of the parts, but not essential, so groups without access to this technology can still play it. Movement Two, Motion, reverts back to standard notation and builds a sense of momentum through its driving repetitive rhythms, requiring great rhythmic precision. Lies, the third movement, although maintaining the same pulse, is more contemplative, opening with a soulful contrabass solo. The final movement, The Moment, is an exciting finale, with endless transitions between irregular time signatures such as 5/8 and 7/16, and lines which must neatly dovetail together. Beyond Motion Lies the Moment is probably best tackled by confident, rhythmic players, with a conductor, but the ultimate effect will no doubt be tremendously rewarding and exciting.
