These *Two Renaissance Madrigals* are taken from John Farmer's _First Set of English Madrigals to Four Voices_ which was published in London in 1599. Little is known about Farmer except that he was appointed Organist and Master of the Children at Christ Church Cathedral in 1595. In addition to his book of madrigals, he published a book of canons in 1591.

These pieces are printed after the copy surviving in the Royal College of Music, London. The original note values have been retained throughout. The occasional editorial appears above the stave in the usual way, applying to the one note only.   Bernard Thomas
