Six Scottish Island Tunes are arranged for Recorder Quartet by Marg Hall. This collection is comprised of:

1. The Skye Boat Song: (This - possibly one of the best known Scottish songs - is from the late 19th century, and recalls the journey of Bonnie Prince Charlie to Skye after defeat at Culloden in 1746.)

2. The Dark Island: (Is Benbecula. The tune was originally called 'Dr Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry' by its composer, Iain McLachlan in about 1958. The instrumental was later known as 'Dark Island' after the BBC 1962 TV series of the same name.

3. The Arran Boat Song: (Arran is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde. Already known in 1700, this tune was widely published in the 1800's.)

4. Mingulay Boat Song: (This is a traditional Gaelic tune to which words were added by Hugh S. Roberton in the 1930's. The song describes fishermen returning home to the isle of Mingulay where their families wait.)

5. The Isle of May: (This is a small island off the Fife coast. The tune comes from William Vickers' manuscript (1770).)

6. Isle of Harris Polka: (Harris is in the Outer Hebrides. The source of the tune is unknown.)

The composer Marg Hall discovered the recorder as an adult, having earlier learned piano and classical guitar. She has taught the recorder in the Edinburgh area for many years. Her compositions and arrangements have been  published firstly by Hawthorns music, and latterly by Peacock Press. She has been a member of the recorder consort 'Solsequium' for many years, and am a member of the Scottish Recorder Orchestra. She is also a founder-member [in 1978] of the 'Hadley Court Singers'.
