The contents of the volumes give us a good idea of the music that was heard during domestic performances in the Netherlands during the 17th century, the Dutch 'Golden Age'. There was a need for music that was not too difficult (perhaps the busy life left no time for long-term practicing), preferably familiar (eg.folk song settings), and fit to be performed on a variety of instruments so that everybody present, including the beginning musical amateur, could play his part in the concert.  The diversity of Matthysz's volumes surely satisfied those requirements, requirements that were not only important in the 17th century, but may still hold today. In any case, there is a great variety of pieces in this collection; almost as varied are the instrumental possibilities for their performance.
