"La Follia" has proven to be one of the most popular and enduring harmonic progressions from the Renaissance and Baroque period. Throughout history "La Follia" has been used by many great composers including Corelli and Vivaldi, right through to Liszt and Rachmaninoff.

La Follia , Folies d'Espagne or the Folies of Spain is a well known and hauntingly beautiful melody of the 16th century. Possibly of Portugese provenance, the melody has often been used as the theme for a set of variations. The simple melody encompasses 16 bars, set in a minor key with a stately tempo in triple meter. this theme has inspired an ever changing kaleidoscope of musical settings by many different composers. Several examples readily come to mind: Marin Marais' variations of 1681 for unaccompanied viola da gamba and Antonio Vivaldi's masterful setting of La Follia in 1705 which he scored for two violins and continuo. Solo harpsichord arrangements have been written by D'Angelbert, pasquini, Scarlatti and CPE Bach. Yet even today one of the most prized set of variations still remains among Arcangelo' Corelli's vioin sonatas in the Op 5. No 12 published in Rome during 1700.
