Lance Eccles - Orpheus Music - OMP238

Rorate Caeli is apparently scored for Tenor Recorder and Piano. Unfortunately this may not be the only typo in this otherwise delightful new work. Rorate Caeli(rain down dew, o heavens) is a Gregorian Advent hymn presented hereas an effortlessly beautiful melody above generally two part contrapuntal piano writing. The melody appears three times, eaach time slightly different from what's gone before. Frequently changing time signatures would, I believe, be far easier to negotiate and interpret had all the many rests been written conventionally, rather than in values no greater than a crochet. Seeing 10 crochet rests in succession is somewhat mind-boggling at bet. Technicaly straightforward, but expressively challenging, once the rests have been amended I see every reason why Lance Eccles Rorate Caeli will become very popular with the many tenor recorder players looking for something new to play.  Review written by Adam J Dopadlik
