The Recorder Magazine Spring 2024

Six Melodies from Der Fluyten Lustof for Recorder Duet

(The original versions of The Fairest Nymph, The Frog Galliard, The French Courant, Kits Almande, Tom of Bedlam and the English Nightingale can be found in Thiemo Wind's edition (XYZ1013, 1021 and 1023) of Der Fluyten Lustof listed as: No 27 Ballette Gravesand, No.120 2. Courant of Harte diefje wareroom zoo stil, No. 147 De France Courant, No.77 Kits Almande, No.112 Verdwaelde Koningin, and No. 28 Engels Nachtegaltje respectively. I mention this as the numbers quoted by Lance Eccles don't match with Edition XYZ.)

REVIEW

The melodic interest is shared quite evenly between alto and tenor. The keys used are generally comfortable, and not exceeding two flats.  Some of the alto parts venture to top E, so those wishing to use Renaissance-style instruments will need recorders with a two-octave range. Tenor players, in particular, will need to plan breaths as the part is often busy with extended passages of quavers offering little chance to inhale. Eccles' contributions are excellently written plenty for both players to enjoy and fit comfortably under the fingers, with just the occasional challenge. Be warned, however, that each piece ends with either an octave or unison and tuning will need to be immaculate. Every one of these duets was a total joy to play. Thoroughly recommended!
